Met Éireann has issued a Status Red weather warning for Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, and Wicklow.
It issued its highest alert after heavy overnight snowfall that led to accumulations of up to 16cm in the east of the country.
Further snow is forecast throughout the day with the heaviest and most frequent showers in the east.
Snow showers and severe frost have also affected parts of the midlands, but all roads are currently passable.
